How to Be a Good Leader!

Request Appointment

My name is Raigne, and I am the Patient Care Coordinator Lead here at Vision Therapy Institute. I have been in the eye care world for 10 years now and have learned so much along the way. One of the most important things I have learned, and am still learning, is how to be a good leader. When you think of the workplace, you think of typical managers, bosses, and assistant managers. Here at Vision Therapy Institute, we like to look at things a little differently. We have leaders, instead of managers, and I truly believe that sets the tone for how much we respect the people around us. Everyone has the ability to become a leader. Our leaders help to support, encourage, and train our coworkers, and more often than not, our coworkers are the biggest supporters of that role. I wanted to take the time to list a few qualities I think make a good leader!

  1. Accountability: In our office, we always strive to go above and beyond, and have a growth mindset. We are all human, and sometimes that includes making mistakes! Being able to admit those, and improve moving forward is a big plus as a leader. It helps show our team that we truly are all in this together!
  2. Communication: This is a big part of being a good leader. Being able to communicate with your team, not only when things need to be worked on, but when your team deserves praise, is huge! We would be nowhere without good communication.
  3. Empathy: Understanding that no human is the same as the next. The way we learn, hear, and see things, almost always is different than how the next person learns, hears, and sees those same things. This is what makes us unique, and it is important to respect and acknowledge our differences with understanding and kindness.
  4. Trust: We want our patients to trust us, and in order to do that, we have to trust each other in the workplace. Being trustworthy is something that is earned, and a good leader does this on a daily basis.
  5. GROWTH MINDSET: This is by far the most important to me. Having a growth mindset is being able to adapt and move forward through challenges, with a positive outlook. Being able to grow and improve.

At Vision Therapy Institute, we prioritize our core values, and that includes so much more than listed above. Being a good leader does not only apply in the workplace, but in your daily life. Try applying these in your daily situations and see how far it takes you!

This actually takes us into the next topic I would like to discuss; Growth Mindsets vs. Fixed Mindsets.
